In this 2-hour workshop, we’ll work on the inner witness aspect of Authentic Movement. Authentic Movement is a contemplative movement practice with its roots in dance, healing and spirituality. It is fundamentally a relational practice between a mover and a witness, and in this workshop, you will focus on being a mover. With your eyes closed, as you listen to your body’s impulses and move, what comes to your awareness? We’ll pay attention to movements, sensations, feelings, emotions and images in order to cultivate clear awareness in experiencing moving. This witnessing of the self is the inner witness.
‘In Authentic Movement, a mover generally follows the stages of activities: moving – mark making/writing – speaking. We will follow this framework, which I hope helps you to touch something true in you in that moment that may usually be hidden under layers of learned behaviour or social customs.’
Katsura Isobe (she/they) is a somatic-oriented dance artist based in London.
Her recent work is deeply influenced by her Authentic Movement practice. Having trained as an Authentic Movement teacher with Linda Hartley, she teaches regularly in the UK and Japan.
Katsura’s recent creations include moving and writing that develops from her ongoing movement practice in nature. A short film, My Days (2020), is a compilation of daily dance practice in the city and nature. An installation performance, In Collaboration with Mugwort (2022), is a ritual for relating to the plant, mugwort. She is currently writing about its process for a book chapter in the Breath We Share, art.earth Books, due to be published later this year.
Katsura is also a somatic movement and craniosacral therapist. Her artistic and therapeutic work closely inform each other, cultivating attention to one’s bodily phenomenon as the wisdom of life.
