M-laboratory will investigate the concept of modern matriarchy in performative ways, including how to establish and weave different dimensions of the matriarchal into everyday life, with the aim to exchange tools, articulate working conditions, and grow within one’s own research and practice.
Following her performance encounters at the Women’s Art Library (WAL)* as part of our International Festival of Learning 2022, Galit Criden will host a series of conversations, with somatically informed movement experiments, and virtual explorations of some of the archive’s collections.
Participants of all backgrounds are invited to take part, to consider matriarchy as a strategy, to engage archived knowledge through slowness and listening practices, to practice collaborative thinking, and so much more. They will also be invited to consider their own practices through the lens of the Women’s Art Library archive. The course will offer time and space to consider questions including: How do we function without destroying the other? What is matriarchal knowledge and its importance? How can we model matriarchal strategies in our lives and in our research?
The group will then create an open source board of resources, responses and inspirations to be generated and developed together and shared with ID’s community via their digital library.

Galit Criden (IL) is a choreographer and researcher based in London. She holds a BA from the School of Visual Theatre, Jerusalem and an MA Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University, London. Her practice examines sculptural physicality, extended duration, and aesthetic precision where the relation between space, duration, and movement is intensely magnified. She is particularly interested in what sort of conversation her work can have with fixed ways of structuring knowledge to enact change. Galit works with choreography, objects, education, and research and her work has been presented at Wellcome Collection, Chisenhale Dance Space, Museum of Motherhood (US) and Performática Dance Festival (Mexico), among others.
