Colleen’s session aims to include everybody to begin where they are and their own expertise as movers. You will start with deep listening, waking up the senses, bringing us into ‘bodytime’, which will evolve in relationship to the inner and outer conditions of the studio space, and who is present.
You will work with experiential anatomy, perceptual games, sensory awareness, relational intelligence and composition. The session will support a sourcing of individual interests and material, allowing for this to be influenced by the collective, with space for witnessing composition, learning from each other’s explorations and appreciation of what unfolds.
Colleen invites you to bring your curiosity and be prepared for serious play. The atmosphere will be one of curiosity, not-knowing, open questions and responding to change. Instruction will be tailored to who is in the studio.

Independent Dance is resident at Siobhan Davies Studios. To find out more about accessibility and the amenities available within the building please see here.

Alternatively, you may phone the main reception at Siobhan Davies Studios on 0207 091 9650.
During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Cancellations and refunds
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
Colleen Bartley is an interdependent dance artist based in London.
Her invisible disability informs her practice. She is an improviser, teacher, facilitator and works with a variety of disciplines. Her lineage includes contemporary and post-modern dance and somatics with teachers such as: Caryn McHose and Gary Carter (Experiential Anatomy), Susan Schell (Authentic Movement), Nita Little (Emerging Composition), Lisa Nelson (Tuning Scores), Nancy Stark Smith (The Underscore), Nina Martin (Ensemble Thinking), Sherwood Chen (Body Weather).
Colleen is active organising, writing about, and documenting dance. She holds a degree in Dance and Education from Swarthmore College and a postgraduate diploma in Community Dance from Laban Centre and years of experience with Somatic Education.
