Move, Interact, Explore
You will explore how bodily sensation can inform play and creative expression in this intercultural session. You will start with a warm-up through which you will explore principles found in many African dance styles – low centre of gravity, complete shifts of weight, engaging the spine in the production vibrations, rotations, and undulations through the body. Following the warm-up ‘Funmi will use circle games to create space for participants to share their own experiences of social dancing. You will move on to creative tasks which will lead to improvisations in solo, duets and groups exploring different kinds of music. The class draws from ‘Funmi’s practice Ṣere Kinaesthetic.
‘Funmi Adewole Elliott (she/her) is an independent artist and dramaturge who creates solo performances. Ṣere Kinaesthetic is her performance practice, which spans storytelling, dance, and movement research (Ṣere is the Yoruba word for ‘play’). Her interests lie in embodied creativity and how it facilitates artistic citizenship and supports understanding of translocal, and the transnational settings. After touring with African dance theatre and Physical theatre companies for ten years, ‘Funmi taught in Higher education for eight years before returning to industry.

During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
