These classes aim to:
- Find joy through movement
- Approach dancing with curiosity and a generous spirit, towards ourselves and our co-dancers
- Work towards full-bodied dancing with respect to each person’s physicality, interests and appetite to move
You will play with improvisation structures, use touch to expand awareness and movement potential, and explore movement qualities and puzzles related to momentum and gravity, flow vs. interruption.
The classes will aim for a clear through line, while keeping flexibility to meet the needs of each person in the room. This is something Annie invites all participants to contribute to by taking responsibility for your own needs and meeting each other where you are at each moment.
Full-bodied dancing, quiet restfulness and everything in between are all encouraged.
Annie Hanauer (she/her) is a contemporary dance artist who makes choreography, performs extensively, and facilitates dancing in many different settings. Originally from the USA and based between London and France, she has worked across countries and contexts for 17 years, with an established presence on international stages.
As a disabled artist often working with other disabled/crip collaborators, Annie is interested in how bodies in motion can joyfully disrupt ideas of normativity, and how dancing can be a space to challenge societal assumptions connected to the body.
She is interested in the ‘bespoke movement techniques’ disabled artists create for themselves, and how we find ways of moving together that work for everyone in the room. Her practice is influenced by improvisation methods, ‘release’ techniques, touch as communication, and her own personal movement style, which has evolved through years of working in diverse creation processes and creating her own projects.
Independent Dance is resident at Siobhan Davies Studios. To find out more about accessibility and the amenities available within the building please see here.
If you have any questions about the accessibility of our programme and would like to discuss any specific access requirements, please feel free to reach out to us via email info@independentdance.co.uk or by phone on 0207 091 9665, to speak directly to a member of the Independent Dance team. Alternatively, you may phone the main reception at Siobhan Davies Studios on 0207 091 9650.
During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
