“Through living with unilateral hearing loss, I have become aware of our sensitivity to resonance – the way that our bodies are touched and moved by forces of resonance generated in shared space. Currently, I’m interested in the resonance of gentleness (in a world of increasingly divisive polarities). In classes this week I propose exploring the power of gentleness, in mass and momentum; being-with as dancers; attuning to resonance as we dance as part of a temporary community; sensing, moving and resting together as we follow our own desires and curiosity; noticing relations that arise, establish, differentiate and pass in proximity and distance; witnessing, and being witnessed; tapping into undercurrents that move us – the questions and conversations that we bring to dancing; sensing what matters today, or in this moment, as our visceral, sensitive, sensual, dreaming, thinking bodies move.
Explorations will be based on propositions – usually word-based scores for improvisation that also draw on somatic practices such as Skinner Releasing Technique, Body Weather, Experiential Anatomy and Authentic Movement. Participants are invited to bring their practice/interests into conversation with the proposals that I offer – there will be time for drawing, writing and reflection too. My intention is that this should be an inclusive space for dancers and non-dancers. Please check in with ID and with me at the beginning of class regarding any specific needs or adaptations.”
Cancellations and refunds
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
Carolyn Roy (she/her)
London-based dancer/writer whose practice speculates on questions of what it is to be with others in this world, to be-with as dancers, the politics and pleasure of dancing. As a single parent, she has become increasingly conscious of the way that concerns of art and life intertwine and how these strands can be acknowledged, respected and navigated in creative work. As a practitioner channelling the somatic processes and understanding we use as dancers through other art forms, her body of presented/published work includes poetic and critical texts, sound narratives, film and photographic projects as well as live performances.
Carolyn is a regular collaborator with photographic artist, Sarah Dobai (most recently contributing somatic awareness to a Fendi feature for Numero magazine). She has performed in work by Gaby Agis, Marina Collard, the Pacitti Company, Florence Peake, Tino Sehgal, Margarita Zaffrilla Olayo and filmmaker, Keira Greene. She is a member of Chisenhale Dance Space and Musarc choir ensemble. She has a PhD (practice as research) in dance, has taught at the Architectural Association, ID, and Lincoln University, and at the Place and on MA and BA courses at Trinity Laban.
