These classes are an invitation to explore attention tuning, bodily listening, collective listening and dance improvisation practices Carolyn has used to engage with the electromagnetic waves within our environment, focusing on how our bodies receive and respond physically to the (often inaudible) fragile radio waves that continuously pass through our world:
‘I use “listening” to denote both tuning attention with the whole body and aural listening. We will dive deeply into sounds captured by openwave radio, a VLF receiver, a live streambox and natural radio recordings of astral and weather events, experimenting with somatic movement scores that enable us to sense these bodily, and respond to their ephemeral force in our shared present.
Can we use listening and listening-with to attune to our collective experience as we dance? What can these practices reveal about the material and relational aspects of our lived experience, our interconnections with each other, the local ecology and wider environment?’
Carolyn Roy (she/her) is a London based dancer whose practice channels the somatic processes and understanding we use as dancers through other art forms, including poetic and critical texts, sound narratives, film and photographic projects as well as live performances and political actions.
Carolyn uses improvisation scores and somatic processes to explore the social agency, politics (and pleasure) of dancing together; trans-disciplinary encounter and exchange, often working with philosophical concepts through the materiality of bodies, e.g. using scores derived from Experiential Anatomy to work with propositions in Anne Dufourmantelle’s The Power of Gentleness.
Her current project, Receivers, is concerned with practices of micro-attention to electromagnetic fields that effectively co-constitute bodies and their environments. She is interested in ecological interconnection and developing scores for co-composition that awareness of our entanglement with our world at a granular level can offer, using practices of dance improvisation, radio listening and collective listening to access and explore this territory.
Independent Dance is resident at Siobhan Davies Studios. To find out more about accessibility and the amenities available within the building please see here.
If you have any questions about the accessibility of our programme and would like to discuss any specific access requirements, please feel free to reach out to us via email info@independentdance.co.uk or by phone on 0207 091 9650, to speak to a member of the Independent Dance team.
During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable.
If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
