In this class you will seek out both the depths and the edges of dancing, tuning into the unexplainable, the unrecognisable and the uncategorisable. You will work with dancing as attention, flickering back and forth between inside and outside, seen and unseen, performer and audience.
The first half of the class will be a guided movement exploration, fuelling autonomous and pleasure-full dancing. The second half will consist of ‘zero stakes’ performances’, instant choreographies performed one-to-one or group-to-group, where the craft of seeing dances gets expanded and activated, opening both seer and doer to parallel universes and alternate realities. This class is suitable for experienced performance practitioners from any discipline.
This week of morning class forms part of the MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional Investigative Practice module, this year curated by Seke Chimutengwende. This means that there are a reduced number of public places available. If this class is sold out, please join the waiting list to be notified if a place becomes available.

Cancellations and refunds
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
Charlie Ashwell (they/she) is a dancer, dramaturg, and choreographic researcher, currently pursuing a practice-as-research PhD at the University of Sussex, thinking about dance as a form of magic. Active in the independent dance scene in London since 2009, they have performed with Seke Chimutengwende, Florence Peake, and Dog Kennel Hill Project, among others; practised dramaturgy for Seke, Frances Morgan and Greg Wohead; and made their own works: solo ‘Banishing Dance‘ and duet ‘spells‘, with Frances. Their teaching practice has evolved over the last 8 years of teaching technique, improvisation and choreography at the University of Roehampton. Their research currently centres around the practice of ‘scores for watching‘, which activate ways of seeing dance that expand and challenge what we experience as ‘real‘.
