Morning Class: Gaby Agis + Rachel Lopez de la Nieta

A dancer is outdoors on a grassy area, bent forward with her hands on the ground as she attends to long folds of brown burlap fabric spread around her. Her posture suggests concentration and a physical dialogue with the material, as though she is arranging, sensing or responding to it through movement. She wears an orange-red top and an orange skirt with decorative patches, and a few scattered autumn leaves rest on the grass and fabric, adding to the quiet, tactile atmosphere of the moment.

Monday – Wednesday, Gaby Agis:
Developed by Joan Skinner,  Skinner Releasing Technique (SRT) is a pioneering approach to dance, movement and creative process that has evolved from the simple principle that when we are releasing physical tension, we can move with greater freedom, power and articulation. This week Gaby will be teaching Class 6, 7 and 8 (from the 15 Classes of the Introductory Pedagogy). It is useful, but not essential, to have some experience of the earlier classes.

In SRT classes, spontaneous movement evoked by guided poetic imagery, supported by music and sound, enables a creative and easily accessible exploration of technical movement principles such as multi-directional alignment, suppleness, suspension, economy and autonomy. As participants let go of habitual holding patterns, they are supported to cultivate an increasing sensitivity to their own physical and imaginative experience. The result can be a deeply embodied awareness of new possibilities in how they move – both inside the studio as dancers and creators, and in daily life.

Thursday + Friday Rachel Lopez de la Nieta:
Rachel will invite participants to enter a playful yet contemplative space where the materiality of the body, space and other will be used as starting points for dancing. Class activity includes; practicing essential movement gestures,  sensory contemplations, spontaneous relational composition and ritual performance scores.

Rachel’s class is underpinned by Buddhist notions of perception formation and impermanence, she is interested in tapping into the powerful current of the unfolding experience as a way to spend time together. It will particularly suit people who have an interest in digging into their creative movement archive both individually and collectively, in ways that could be playful, profound, poetic and complicated or ridiculous.

This week of morning class forms part of the MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional programme, meaning that there are a reduced number of public places available. If this class is sold out, please join the waiting list to be notified if a place becomes available.
