The classes Katye guides tend to have 3 parts;
- An extended verbally offered solo score touring participants into full moving/ dancing. Katye draws on experiential anatomy, philosophy, nervous system regulation and relative safety alongside the rich information that she is witnessing from the people dancing alongside them.
- Something in two’s or three’s – working in partnerships or trios (with solo adaptations for those who prefer), to bring contact and weight sharing into the room. Katye draws from Skinner Releasing Technique, Contact Improvisation and their current dancing enquiries here.
- Moving across the floor (usually using the metaphor of a river) to integrate each person’s learning/ curiosities. These crossings incorporate possibilities to develop phrases or personal/ shared scores.
Katye works with an understanding that every body that comes can participate fully through what they offer and can bring their preferences and interests into the detail that she brings. There are ‘gaps’ between each of the three parts where folk can choose to rest, speak, continue dancing etc. All energy levels welcome, as is open enquiry, questions and always an invitation from Katye that you will be taking care of your needs on that day.
This week of morning class forms part of the MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional programme, meaning that there are a reduced number of public places available. If this class is sold out, please join the waiting list to be notified if a place becomes available.
Please note that filming and photography will be taking place in Thursday’s class. If you do not wish to be recorded, please speak to a member of the team.
Katye Coe (she/they) is a professional contemporary dancer and teacher who has been at work in this field for 30 years across the UK and internationally. Katye sometimes work as a dance specific pastoral care worker too.
She is a qualified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, a trauma informed body based therapy that can support folk toward renegotiating experiences that feel stuck or unsafe to that person. Find out more about Somatic Experiencing here.
Katye calls on the work of many of their own teachers, collaborators, authors, activists and friends who have and continue to influence and inform their dancing. Katye will always attempt to name and reference those that are ‘in the work’ that day.

If you have any questions about the accessibility of our programme and would like to discuss any specific access requirements, please feel free to reach out to us via email info@independentdance.co.uk or by phone on 0207 091 9650, to speak to a member of the Independent Dance team.
During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
