Morning Class: Laura Weston

Laura captured teaching a workshop in Malta. She is reaching her arm backwards and her other hands rests on her chest. She is seeing into the distance as she shares information about the performance practices of Last Shelter.

Laura is on stage performing in Last Shelter with Candoco Dance Company. Her legs are split wide apart, stretched and arms are held above her head her focus is down as she looks at her front foot. She is joined on stage by Anna Seymore, Annie Edwards, Sean Murray and Ben Ash. There’s a rug, a table tipped on its side, a microphone laying on the floor with Ben speaking into it and two blue plastic chairs, one upright and one tipped over.

Laura is dancing in front of a table, held up on its end by fellow dance artist Jane Mason who is stood behind it, holding on to its sides. The table is taller than Laura as she dances in front of it, her arms are energetic and angular and her hands flat, she is light on the balls of her feet. She is dancing very close to the table and is looking at it whilst she moves.

Throughout the week, you will work with somatic practices that support you in tuning into and noticing your materiality, working with sensation and imagination to explore the internal landscape of the body. You will work with scores and improvisational tasks that support you being in relation to each other, expanding your awareness to the wider field and what can be a resource for your moving and dancing. There will be time to move alone and in groups, attending to what is present in the space, your interests for moving and dancing, and your decision-making whilst moving with others.

Laura’s desire to keep moving and dancing—even when life gets messy and challenging—forms part of her ongoing research into dance as a resource and as a way of participating in life whilst honouring what is sustainable.

There will be space for big dancing, small dancing, resting and witnessing—whether you dance often or have been away from dance for a while or just love to move, come as you are.
