Lucia’s classes are an opportunity to tune in to yourself and your senses, and enjoy more discernment in your noticing of thought, mood, and movement. You will find ways to invite ease and energy into your dancing, and depth and sensitivity into your connections with others. You will increase your receptivity to your sense of vision, proprioception and touch, encouraging a three-dimensional spatial awareness, letting gravity influence and organise your body, and allowing dances to develop from the interplay of movement exploration and simple scores. You will look at the balance between being active and receptive, calm and lively, and between doing and non-doing.
Through exploring how we can direct our attention and increasing our awareness of how we respond, we will refresh what we already know and develop new abilities of connection, composition and creativity. Classes will include the chance to be witnessed and watch and in turn to witness and watch others. Classes will include quiet, subtle work as well as energetic and playful movement. Each participant is invited to participate according to their own ability and energy.
This week of morning class forms part of the MA/MFA Creative Practice: Dance Professional Investigative Practice module, this year curated by Seke Chimutengwende. This means that there are a reduced number of public places available. If this class is sold out, please join the waiting list to be notified if a place becomes available.

Cancellations and refunds
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
Lucia Walker (she/her) is based in Wales and works internationally as an Alexander teacher and Movement artist. Lucia has been dancing all her life and involved with Alexander Technique and Contact Improvisation for 40 years. She continues to practice, perform and teach Contact Improvisation and Instant Composition, exploring how to easily enter a creative state of presence. She also teaches Alexander Technique to groups and individuals as well as training teachers.
Lucia facilitates regularly for Independent Dance (London), Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (at Ebhudlweni rural arts centre South Africa) and Rose Bruford Theatre School. Lifelong learning is supported by her teaching of people from a wide range of ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds. Lucia loves the way movement exploration, awareness practices and play can provide both a method of self-care and a ‘common language’ which lies beneath different cultural experiences and styles of dance.
‘Alexander work enables us to consciously co-operate with our human design, to be both active and receptive, calm and lively. From my dog I continue to learn more about embodied presence and pandiculation and am inspired to dancing outdoors and walking in all weathers.’
