Through guided explorations games and scores, participants will explore different ways of generating material and relating that material to others. You will develop the skills of listening, noticing and responding; working alone, in pairs and as a group, practising moving and using your voices together.
There will be the opportunity to watch each other in our explorations. Seke Chimutengwende brings all his experience and humour as a performer into this class. His teaching facilitates ease and confidence in performing and a joyful approach to improvising together.
Seke Chimutengwende is a choreographer and performer working in the UK and abroad for 20 years. His recent work It begins in darkness (2022), looks at ghosts and haunted houses as metaphors for how histories of slavery and colonialism haunt the present. Seke has also recently choreographed a work for Candoco Dance Company, In Worlds Unknown (2022). He is currently researching two new works: The Last Quartet, which imagines a “last work” or “last attempt” at choreography inspired by TS Eliot’s Four Quartets; and an as-yet untitled work inspired by Miles Davis’ electric period of the early 1970’s.
Alongside his choreographic work, Seke is currently touring Long Solos: long solo improvisation performances of 50 to 60 minutes and touring with Forced Entertainment in And on the thousandth night… (2000), If All Else Fails (2023) and Signal to Noise (2024).
Seke teaches improvisation in a variety of contexts internationally.

During class, all participants are welcome to take breaks, observe, exit and enter the space as they wish. Lounge areas are available on the first and ground floors of the building. Yoga mats, blocks, cushions and ear defenders are available for use. We also welcome you being in contact if you would like to discuss the option of bringing your access support worker. Please speak to a member of the ID team if you require any assistance.
Prices for classes are kept very low and are subsidised by ID in order to support artists to attend. To keep admin manageable for our small team, we don’t offer refunds if you cancel or can’t attend a class, and we can’t transfer your booking to a different class/event. We hope this is understandable. If a class is cancelled or changed by ID however, we do offer refunds/transfers to everyone who has booked.
