Morning Class: Stopgap Dance Company

Stopgap Senior Dance Artists Nadenh Poan and Christian Brinklow in a studio with a shiny wooden floor and white walls. They’re in a moment of connected movement, with Nadenh balancing on one wheel of his wheelchair, leaning towards Christian, who is stepping forward and holding Nadenh’s outstretched arm in both hands. Other dancers watch, blurred in the foreground.

Senior Dance Artist & Choreographer Nadenh Poan a British Cambodian wheelchair dancer, and Senior Dance Artist Hannah Sampson a white learning disabled person who has Down syndrome, working together in a dance. Nadenh is leaning forward in his manual wheelchair to cradle Hannah’s head in his hands, while Hannah is sitting on the floor, eyes closed with legs outstretched in front. Blurred but still visible in the background, multiple dance artists watch on.

Stopgap’s Company Class will begin with a gathering to arrive and check in, followed by focussed mobilisation sequences to warm the body and attention. Stopgap’s Senior Artists, Christian Brinklow and Nadenh Poan, will offer structured exercises with multiple access points, supporting a range of physicalities and learning styles, sharing the company’s playful guided improvisations — inviting dancers to explore new movement textures, dynamics, and expressive possibilities. Each class will culminate in the learning of a movement phrase, taught in a way that encourages clarity and choice, allowing us to move together in unison while finding joy in individual interpretation.

Stopgap’s class will follow a consistent and supportive structure that will develop over the course of the week.

There will also be an opportunity to chat to members of the company after class to find out more about the company’s artistic practice and equitable culture.  Join them in the Parlour on the Ground Floor 12:00-13:00 each day.
