Dance artist Sally E. Dean reflects on her time in Java, sharing insights about the role of the performer, tradition vs. modernity, and the creation of performance space and time in the culture.
Sally E. Dean (USA/UK) is an American performing artist, choreographer, playwright and teacher whose work has been performed internationally throughout Europe, Indonesia, and the USA. She has taught at the Laban Centre (2005-2006), Central School of Speech and Drama (2006-2007), Chichester University (2004-2006) in England, and more recently in Indonesia at Java’s national university (ISI, 2007). She is the founding director of her own performing arts company, and the Kolaborasi project, whose mission is to bring American, British and Indonesian artists together to collaborate and tour their performances internationally.
