Writer, director, performer and interpreter Sue MacLaine offers her perspectives on meaning making, cultural mediation, intention, and assumption and her approach to creating interpretation for live performance. She reflects on how her practice as an interpreter influences her artistic practice and ponders the relationship between the linguistic and the choreographic.

Sue MacLaine is a writer, performer, director and dramaturge. Her most recent work ‘Can I Start Again Please’ received positive critical acclaim and won the Total Theatre Award for ‘Innovation, Experimentation and Playing with Form’ at Edinburgh Fringe 2015 and has subsequently toured nationally and in London (Battersea Arts Centre & The Southbank).
Her new work ‘Vessel’ has been co-commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre and The Attenborough Centre working with Jonathan Burrows reprieving his role as dramaturge.
Her directing and dramaturgy work is predominantly with dance artists. She has recently collaborated with dancer/choreographer Janine Fletcher to create ‘Trace Elements’ that was performed as part of Tanzmesse 2016. She acted as dramaturge and co-director on ‘Now You See It’; a new solo work by Antonia Grove.
She was a member of Feminist Theatre Collective ‘Scarlet Harlets’ from 1983- 1989 and then spent two years with Kenneth Branagh’s Renaisssance Theatre Company performing in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘King Lear’. Since then she has concentrated on creating her own work.
